Nigerians react: Tackling Boko Haram

This is a war
I want to say that the Federal Government needs to identify what pushes people to become religious extremists, identify the sponsors and supporters of Boko Haram and launch a full-scale war against the sect. Under no circumstance should the FG grant amnesty to them. There is no point granting amnesty to murderers.
— Akinbobola Akinola
We need foreign help
Since our President does not trust the military men, as seen in the frequent changes of defence personnel, he should allow foreign forces to take over.
— Michael Adeyemi
Increase surveillance
I think the Federal Government needs to ensure that the perpetrators of violence are brought to book. They should account for their crimes. Also, the FG needs to consider aerial surveillance. There is a need for more sophisticated and satellite-enabled technology and equipment like it is done in other developed countries.
— Joy Anayochi
Increase military force
We are not under military rule where decisions are taken without consultation. The President should repeat what happened in Odi, Bayelsa State. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo authorised the military to attack the community when things were getting out of control.
— Ozioma Dike
Wage war against their financiers
One cannot cure a wrongly diagnosed illness. Government should sit up and go all out to fight the financiers of the terror group. I don’t think any political party is behind the group. This is terrorism and we should try to win the battle.
— Kolade Badmus
Allow full military operations
The Federal Government should allow the military take total control of the states where insurgency is thriving. The state governors are helpless. They are not helping matters. There should be a full emergency rule. When the army takes over, it will assist largely in checking the insurgency.
— Tobi Aina-Scott
Use maximum force
The use of force should be introduced since it seems dialogue has failed. And they have to investigate many government officials that have been indicted one way or another. I believe Boko Haram has sponsors. The killing of those innocent children is just not acceptable. One would think a serious measure would be introduced immediately. But it is saddening that nothing serious has been done.
— Chidinma Ngejuru
Monitor their activities
There should be an insider or a spy who will report activities of the violent sect. The members have hideouts. They do not operate from space.   The agent would get some information about their operations, when and where they intend to attack.  Then, the Federal Government would know how to tackle them. If they can’t, then they should call for help from the US Central Intelligence Agency and any other competent agency. If this is not done, Boko Haram will spread to other parts of the country.
— Michael Adebayo
Sponsors in government
Members of the group are not faceless.  They are supported by people in government who assume they are fighting for a noble cause. The President should fish them out. They are the ones financing terrorism.
— Uzoma Achusim
Unmask their sponsors
The best way to stop the insurgency is to tackle it from the root. Mr. President should wage war against sponsors of the sect. There are some people who fund the violent group. Once their source of funding is attacked, the group will struggle to survive.
— Cyrus Agbo

Put national interest first
The government must come absolutely clean concerning the issue of Boko Haram. It cannot fight evil with evil. Also, in dealing with the issue, Mr. President must put aside political interests. He should tackle it as a leader. Putting political interests before the welfare of the people strips him of the leadership mandate. Once he is ready to do this, he can then employ strategic plans to battle the sect. The military ought to also be empowered.
— Uzor Peters II
Embrace dialogue
The Federal Government should initiate dialogue with the group. Boko Haram should send representatives to meet with government’s delegation to discuss the sect’s grouse.  The essence of the incessant killings isn’t clear to us. The first thing for them to do is to come out of their hiding and state what they want. When this is done, the FG will know what to do.
— Funmi Adetunji
Win citizens’ confidence
Can the Federal Government really tackle Boko Haram once and for all? I do not think this is feasible. There is a nonchalant attitude by government and fear on the part of the people who have information. If government doesn’t win the confidence of the people, members of the sect will continue to do things and get away with them. If government can guarantee the security of the citizens, we are then heading for the right direction.
— Tobi Okonofua
Fish out their sponsors
Unfortunately, what we are witnessing is the outcome of years of negligence of pressing national problems. The sect has sponsors who the government know. The first step is to identify them, equip the army and declare war on the blood suckers.
— Emmanuel Udeagha
Secure Nigeria’s borders
The first thing Mr. President  needs to do is to tighten the security around the borders of Nigeria especially in the North. States where insurgency is at its peak should also be well manned by security forces.
